Traveling to Japan is an incredible experience, but it can also feel overwhelming if it’s your first time. From figuring out trains to trying new foods, there’s a lot to plan for. I’ve put together some practical tips from my recent trip, plus a few food recommendations, apps, and money hacks that really made my visit smoother and more fun.

Food Recommendations

Japan is a food lover’s paradise. From Tokyo to Kyoto, the choices can be endless, but I’ve narrowed it down based on what my friends and I tried.

In Tokyo, here are a few must-try spots: Food in Tokyo Map. We explored local eateries, ramen shops, and sushi bars. One tip: don’t shy away from smaller, hole-in-the-wall restaurants—they often have the most authentic flavors.

In Kyoto, food is a mix of traditional Japanese cuisine and modern cafés: Food in Kyoto Map. Kyoto is famous for kaiseki (traditional multi-course meals), matcha desserts, and street food like yatsuhashi.

7/11 Recommendations – Yes, convenience stores in Japan are on another level! Some of my favorites include:

Pork, ham, cheese, and lettuce salad – SO GOOD, perfect for a quick meal.
Egg salad sandwich – a classic that never disappoints.
Strawberry and cream sandwich – sweet and fresh, my go-to treat.
Chicken, veggies, sweet potato salad – also SO GOOD.
Coolish ice cream – soft serve in a squeezable pouch, perfect for dessert on the go.

Honestly, the 7/11 food alone is worth trying at least once. The quality and variety are amazing.

Money Tips

Handling money in Japan is different from many countries, so here are some practical tips:

Coins are essential – Bring a coin purse or buy one there. You’ll need coins for vending machines, small purchases, and train tickets.
Cash – For our trip, exchanging around $400 worked well. ATMs are everywhere, but having cash is handy.
IC Card – Get a Suica or Pasmo card when you arrive. If you have an iPhone, you can sometimes set it up beforehand. We loaded ours with ¥20,000 per card. You’ll use it for trains, buses, and even some stores like 7/11.
Check for credit card acceptance – Not everywhere takes cards, so always ask before ordering if you’re not sure.

Transportation Tips

Japan’s train system is efficient but can look intimidating at first. Here’s what helped:

Google Maps works great – Download offline maps for the areas you’ll visit so you can navigate even without Wi-Fi.
Don’t stress about taxis – Sometimes, taking a taxi is worth it. Spending an hour on trains versus 15 minutes in a taxi is a no-brainer, especially if you’re tired or traveling with luggage.
IC Card – Again, this is your best friend for transportation. No need to buy individual tickets each time, and it works in multiple cities.

Apps That Make Life Easier

Japan has a lot of apps that make traveling smoother. Here’s a list of what we found essential:

Google Translate – A must-have for reading signs, menus, or communicating with locals.
Go – Taxi App – Super easy to use for booking rides.
Suica – Manage your IC card for trains, buses, and some purchases.
Flush – Japan has public toilets everywhere, but this app helps you find them instantly.
ecbo cloak – Perfect for finding luggage lockers when you want to explore hands-free.
Payke – Scan product barcodes to translate ingredients and get store coupons.
LUUP – Rent scooters or bikes for short trips around the city.
Klook – Buy tickets to attractions like teamLAB and other experiences in advance.

Shopping and Passport Tips

Bring your passport – It’s required for certain things, and it also lets you get tax-free prices at eligible stores. Note: the duty-free rules will change in 2026, so check before your trip.
KitKats – Japan is famous for unique KitKat flavors. I tried the Mt. Fuji flavor (blueberry cheesecake) and loved it. Definitely worth sampling a few!

Final Thoughts

Japan can feel overwhelming at first, but with these tips, it’s much easier to enjoy. Having cash, using an IC card, downloading the right apps, and trying local foods makes a huge difference. Don’t overthink the train system—Google Maps works well, and taxis can save a lot of time. And for food lovers, don’t miss convenience stores or local specialty restaurants.

Traveling in Japan is about balance: plan enough so you don’t get lost, but also leave room for spontaneous discoveries. Whether it’s tasting a new KitKat flavor, riding a bike around a quiet Kyoto street, or finding a tucked-away ramen shop in Tokyo, these little moments make the trip unforgettable.

Day 8: Our Last Full Day in Tokyo

Leaving Kyoto felt heavier than I expected. Somewhere between the quiet mornings, temple walks, and slow evenings, the city had become familiar. It was calm in a way that settles into you. Still, the plan was always to return to Tokyo before flying home, so we packed our bags early and got ready for the last stretch of our trip. We asked the hotel concierge to call a taxi for us at 8:00 a.m., which instantly made the morning easier. By 8:15, we were already on our way to Kyoto Station, watching the streets slowly wake up outside the window. There was something peaceful about seeing the city in motion without being part of the rush.

Traveling Back to Tokyo

Kyoto Station can feel overwhelming at first, but it is also incredibly efficient. Signs are clear, staff are helpful, and everything runs on time. We followed the signs toward the Shinkansen gates, grabbed a quick coffee, and found our platform without any stress.

By 9:00 a.m., we were boarding the bullet train to Tokyo. The seats were wide and comfortable, and the car was quiet. We made sure to sit on the left side of the train, which gives you the best chance of seeing Mount Fuji if the weather cooperates.

Even before the train started moving, I felt that familiar sense of calm that comes with train travel in Japan. Everything just works the way it should.

Once the train left the station, Kyoto slowly faded into the background. Traditional rooftops gave way to open spaces, smaller cities, and eventually dense urban scenery. I spent most of the ride looking out the window and thinking about how quickly the trip had gone by.

Arriving in Tokyo

We arrived in Tokyo around 11:45 a.m., and the energy was instantly different. Kyoto feels soft and slow. Tokyo feels alive and nonstop. After days of quieter streets, the noise and movement felt intense but familiar.

We headed straight to The Gate Hotel Asakusa Kaminarimon by Hulic. We only stayed here for one night, and it was a practical choice rather than a luxury one. The room was comfortable enough, and the biggest highlight was the view. From our window, we could see Tokyo Skytree rising above the city, especially striking once the sun went down.

Staying in Asakusa made sense for our last night. It was easy to get around, close to the airport train, and full of things to see without needing to travel far.

Seeing Asakusa from Above

One of the best surprises in this area was the Asakusa Culture and Tourism Center, located right across the street from the hotel. We took the elevator up to the observation deck on the top floor, and the view was worth it.

From above, you can see Kaminarimon Gate and the grounds of Sensō-ji Temple laid out below. Watching people move through the temple from this angle felt calming. It gave us a chance to take everything in before stepping back into the crowds.

Best of all, the observation deck is free, making it an easy stop to add to your day.

After enjoying the view, we headed back down and walked through Kaminarimon Gate. The massive red lantern hanging in the center always makes the entrance feel dramatic, no matter how many times you have seen it in photos.

From there, we wandered down Nakamise Street, the oldest shopping street in Japan. The street was busy, lined with stalls selling traditional sweets, snacks, and souvenirs. It was loud, crowded, and full of energy, but in a way that felt fun rather than overwhelming.

We took our time walking through, stopping whenever something caught our attention. This part of the day was less about seeing specific sights and more about wandering and enjoying the atmosphere.

Snacks You Should Not Skip

Not far from the temple, we found a few food stalls that were impossible to pass up.

First was Asakusa Kagetsudō, known for its giant melon bread. Warm, fluffy, and lightly sweet, it made for the perfect afternoon snack.

We also stopped at a stall selling freshly pressed flattened shrimp crackers. Thin, crispy, and salty, they were incredibly addictive. I recommend getting more than one because they disappear fast.

These simple food stops ended up being some of the most memorable parts of the afternoon.

One place I really wanted to visit was Bar Centifolia, a cocktail bar known for its creative drinks and unique bartending style. Unfortunately, it requires reservations, and we did not plan far enough ahead.

Even though we missed it, it is worth mentioning if you are planning a similar trip. It looks like a fun and memorable experience and would make a great stop on a Tokyo night.

Cats, Arcades, and a Very Tokyo Night

After wandering around Asakusa, we decided to lean into something a little random and very on brand for Tokyo. We went to Cat Cafe MONTA, because honestly, why not. Most of the cats were completely passed out, living their best sleepy lives, but a few were surprisingly playful. And yes, they had a munchkin cat, which I became immediately obsessed with. Short legs, big personality. Worth the stop alone.

From there, we headed to GIGO Akihabara Building 3c, a massive six-floor arcade that felt like pure sensory overload in the best way. Every floor had something different, but my favorites were the music and dance games and the retro floor. Lights, sounds, flashing screens, and people fully locked in on their games. It was chaotic and fun and very Tokyo.

We ended the night in Shinjuku City, wandering with no real plan. We saw the famous 3D cat billboard, the giant Godzilla head, and even popped into a pet store where some cats were priced at 1,000,000 yen, which is about $6,400 USD. Absolutely wild.

Final Thoughts

As the night before leaving rolled in, everything started to sink in. We packed our bags, double-checked alarms, and replayed the trip in our heads while the city buzzed quietly outside. Knowing we had an easy departure the next morning helped, especially since we planned to take the Keisei Access Express straight to Narita International Airport, a direct ride that takes about 60 to 75 minutes.

We didn’t end up visiting Tokyo DisneySea or Universal Studios Japan this time, but adding an extra day would make it doable if those are on your list. Just be sure to check crowd levels and opening times, since we heard waits could stretch for hours during our October visit.

Our Last Full Day in Kyoto

Knowing it was our last full day in Kyoto made the morning feel a little more special. There’s something about the final day in a place that makes everything slower and more meaningful. We wanted to soak it all in. No rushing, no overpacking the schedule, just enjoying Kyoto for what it is.

We woke up before sunrise, bundled up, and stepped out into the quiet streets, ready for one last day of temples, food, and small moments.

Sunrise at Fushimi Inari Taisha

Our first stop was Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, famous for its thousands of bright red torii gates winding up the mountain. We arrived early, just after sunrise, hoping to beat the crowds. While there were already a few other early risers, it was still calm enough to find quiet moments between groups.

We walked past the main gate and into the tunnel of torii gates, waiting patiently for gaps to open up so we could grab photos without people in them. It took a little patience, but honestly, that felt like part of the experience. Slow steps, deep breaths, soft morning light. It was peaceful in a way that’s hard to explain.

And then, the highlight I didn’t expect: cats. Our very first cats in Japan, casually hanging out around the shrine like they owned the place. It felt like a good sign, like Kyoto was giving us one last little surprise before we left.

We didn’t hike all the way to the top. Instead, we walked up to one of the early lookout points, took it all in, and then headed back down. Sometimes turning around early is the right call.

Making Rings on Ninenzaka

Late morning, we made our way back to Ninenzaka Street, one of Kyoto’s most charming historic areas, for a ring-making experience at Glänta Kyoto. This was something I’d been looking forward to, and it ended up being one of my favorite moments of the entire trip.

Layton and I each got to choose everything, metal type, ring shape, texture, finish, and even engravings. Then one of the craftsmen guided us through every step of the process, letting us shape and polish our rings by hand.

It felt personal in the best way. Not rushed, not touristy, just thoughtful and meaningful. Walking out with rings we made ourselves, knowing we’ll always associate them with Kyoto, felt really special. If you’re ever in Kyoto, I genuinely recommend booking this in advance. It’s a solid 10/10 experience.

Lunch Plans (It was changed and that’s okay)

For lunch, we originally planned to go back to our favorite taco spot… only to realize it was closed. Mondays happen. Instead of being disappointed, we rolled with it and found Rigoletto Smoke Grill & Bar nearby.

It ended up being a great backup plan. We shared pizza and ordered a wagyu beef bolognese, which was rich, comforting, and exactly what we needed. It wasn’t Japanese food, but sometimes your body just wants something familiar, and that’s okay.

Sunset at Kiyomizu-dera

In the late afternoon, we headed out again, this time to Kiyomizu-dera Temple for sunset. The walk up was familiar by now, but the atmosphere felt completely different.

The sky was soft, the leaves were starting to change, and a light rain drifted through the air. Instead of ruining the moment, the rain made everything feel more magical. The temple glowed, the wooden stage looked dramatic against the mist, and the colors felt deeper somehow.

Standing there, looking out over Kyoto as the light faded, I felt grateful. Not just for the view, but for the entire experience of being here at this exact time.

A Quiet Night In

By evening, we were tired in that good way. The kind of tired where going out sounds less appealing than staying in. So instead of finding a restaurant, we stopped by 7-Eleven and grabbed dinner to eat in our hotel room.

Simple, easy, comforting. Honestly? Perfect.

We talked about the trip, scrolled through photos, and just existed quietly for a while. Those moments don’t always make it to Instagram, but they matter just as much.

Final Reflections on Kyoto

This last day in Kyoto felt like the perfect, gentle ending to our time here. Between the early morning shrine visit, creating something meaningful with our own hands, and watching the city glow at sunset, everything felt calm and unhurried. The light rain and cooler air added to the mood, making Kyoto feel even more peaceful and cozy.

The leaves were starting to change, and while we missed peak fall colors, it reminded me that travel doesn’t always line up perfectly with nature, and that’s okay. Sometimes you get exactly the experience you’re meant to have, even if it looks a little different from what you imagined.

Kyoto gave us quiet mornings, beautiful temples, comforting food, and moments where we could slow down and be present. It’s a city that stays with you long after you leave.

We started our morning early—really early—in Gion. The plan was to catch sunrise photos along the cobblestone streets of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka before the crowds showed up. In my head, I imagined empty streets, quiet mornings, and soft golden light.

What I didn’t expect was that everyone else had the same idea.

By the time we arrived, there were already people setting up tripods, waiting patiently for gaps in the crowd, and doing the same careful dance of trying to take photos without strangers in the background. So instead of frustration, we chose patience. We waited, took photos when we could, laughed about it, and accepted that some people would need to be edited out later.

Even with the crowds, there was still something special about being there so early. The streets felt calm underneath the activity, and the light hitting the wooden buildings made the whole area glow.

Lunch at Nishiki Market

When hunger kicked in, we headed to Nishiki Market, and I loved it.

Yes, it was busy. Yes, it was loud. But it was also colorful, lively, and full of energy. The market is lined with food stalls selling everything from seafood to sweets, and the best way to experience it is to wander and try whatever looks good.

We sampled fried shrimp, sushi, and a sweet made with bean paste. Every bite felt like a small surprise, and honestly, everything we tried was good. This was one of those places where eating is part of the experience, not just something you do to fill time.

After lunch, we took a taxi to Kyoto Sanjo Shopping Street, and the vibe completely changed. Compared to Nishiki, this area felt calm, local, and relaxed with fewer tourists, more everyday shops, and space to actually walk without bumping into anyone.

Here, I tried a cream brûlée donut from Brulee, and it was incredible. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, with that caramelized sugar top. It was easily one of my favorite treats of the trip.

I also stopped by a used kimono shop called きものリサイクル&レンタル朱雀 and picked up a few items. It felt special shopping somewhere that wasn’t overly touristy.

Afternoon Temples in Gion

By afternoon, we made our way back toward Gion to explore more slowly.

We visited Yasaka Shrine, which always feels lively yet peaceful. From there, we headed to Daiun-in Gionkaku Temple. A rare stop since it’s only open a few days a year. Being able to visit made it feel extra special.

Next was Kodaiji Temple, which has a small bamboo grove that feels much quieter than Arashiyama. It wasn’t crowded at all, and we took our time walking through the grounds.

Nearby, we passed Hōkan-ji Temple (the famous Yasaka Pagoda), one of Kyoto’s most recognizable sights. Even after seeing it multiple times, it still stops me in my tracks.

As the sun started to set, we walked back through Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka again. The streets felt completely different now—warmer light, softer shadows, and a calmer pace. It felt like closing a loop on the day, returning to where we started but with a totally different mood.

If you’re not too tired, Kiyomizu-dera Temple is also beautiful at sunset, but it’s worth saving for another day if your legs are done. Kyoto has a way of making walking feel endless.

Dinner in Pontocho Alley

For dinner, we headed to Pontocho Alley, a narrow street running along the Kamogawa River. It’s packed with tiny restaurants and bars, and the atmosphere feels cozy and intimate, especially at night.

We ate at an izakaya, which is basically a casual Japanese bar where you order small dishes to share. The miso soup and shrimp rice bowl were both great. However, we also ordered grilled chicken skin without realizing it was only skin and no meat—and yeah… that one wasn’t for us.

If you’re into cocktails, L’Escamoteur Bar nearby is a fun stop. It’s a magician-themed speakeasy with creative drinks and a cozy vibe.

After dinner, we walked along the Kamogawa River and through quiet side streets back to our hotel. The city felt calm, the air was cool, and the day felt complete.

This was one of my favorite days in Kyoto, not because it was packed with highlights, but because it felt balanced. We explored, rested, ate well, and didn’t rush. The weather was perfect at around 68°F, and trying all the food at the market was easily a highlight.

Extra Tip: Cherry Blossom Season

If you’re visiting during cherry blossom season, don’t miss the Shirakawa Area. Walk north from Hanami-koji Street along the canal lined with weeping willows and traditional teahouses. It’s one of the prettiest parts of Gion, and you might even spot a geisha or maiko quietly passing by.

Some days are about doing everything. This one was about enjoying it, and honestly, those are my favorite kinds of travel days.

Final Thoughts

This day in Kyoto was precisely what we needed: slow, easy, and full of little moments that made the trip feel special. From early morning walks in Gion to trying new food at Nishiki Market, quiet shopping streets, peaceful temples, and a relaxed dinner by the river, everything felt balanced. We didn’t rush; we listened to our energy and let the day unfold naturally. Those are often the days that stick with you the most.

Kyoto has a way of making even simple moments feel meaningful, whether it’s wandering cobblestone streets at sunset or ending the night with a quiet walk back to the hotel. If you’re planning a trip here, don’t feel pressured to pack your schedule; leave room to rest, explore, and enjoy being there.

Day 4 in Japan: Kyoto and Osaka

Day 4 started the same way most mornings in Japan have started for us so far, early. We got ready, stepped outside into cool air, and made our way toward the west side of Kyoto. Even though waking up early usually feels rough, something about Japan makes it easier. Maybe it’s the quiet mornings or the way the air feels fresh before the crowds show up.

Either way, we were excited. Today was all about temples, bamboo forests, and a little side trip to Osaka.

Tenryu-ji Temple and The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

Our first stop was Tenryu-ji Temple, and right away, it felt peaceful. The peaceful that makes you naturally talk softer. The gardens were huge and calm, with big ponds and trees that looked like they’d been cared for for centuries. It was one of those places where you feel your shoulders drop without even trying.

We wandered slowly, taking our time. There was no rush, just the sound of birds and the soft crunch of gravel under our shoes.

Next, we walked straight into the Arashiyama bamboo grove. Yes, it was packed. Super packed. But honestly? Still beautiful. The bamboo shoots were so tall that looking up made me feel tiny, and the way the light slipped through the green leaves made everything feel a little dreamy.

We managed to squeeze into some quieter corners to grab photos, and I’m pretty sure those will end up being some of my favorites from this whole trip.

After the grove, we headed to Adashino Nenbutsu-ji, and the vibe completely changed. The temple was filled with around 8,000 stone statues—all there to honor people who passed away without any family.

It was sad, deeply and quietly. The statues stood close together, covered in moss, some leaning slightly like old friends resting on each other. We walked slowly through the rows, letting the stillness sink in. Even though it was somber, it was also very beautiful.

We tried to visit Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple after, but it was closed. Maybe we’ll try again another day.

Lunch at Hard Rock Cafe before Leaving to Osaka

By the time we headed back toward our hotel area, we were starving. And somehow, we ended up at Hard Rock Cafe—in Japan.

It sounds random, but Layton and I have eaten at Hard Rocks all over the world, on almost every continent… except Asia. So we kind of had to do it. The food tasted exactly how Hard Rock should taste. It’s comforting, familiar, and honestly pretty perfect after walking for hours.

After lunch, we went back to the hotel for a quick nap. And wow, that nap hit so good.

Later in the afternoon, we hopped on a train to Osaka. The ride took about 20 minutes, and as soon as we stepped off the train, it felt like we’d switched worlds completely. Kyoto gives a calm, soft, traditional feel. Osaka gives loud, bright, and “let’s have fun.”

Shinsekai’s and Dōtonbori

We started with Shinsekai, a busy retro-style neighborhood full of neon signs, game arcades, street food stalls, and giant decorations hanging above the streets. It felt chaotic in the most entertaining way.

We walked around, people-watched, and soaked in the noise and color. Osaka definitely knows how to keep you awake.

From there, we made our way to the famous Dōtonbori area, which was even busier. Think crowds, neon everywhere, huge moving signs, basically sensory overload in the best way.

We stopped at the iconic Glico Running Man sign for photos, then wandered into a Matsukiyo store where I grabbed some makeup and souvenirs because… of course I did.

Dinner and Osaka at Night

Dinner was at Kobe Beef WANOMIYA, and wow. Just wow. The beef was buttery, tender, and honestly kind of life-changing. If you go, get the sirloin or the garlic rice bowl with Kobe beef. I’m still thinking about it.

After dinner, we grabbed melon-pan ice cream from a street stall. Warm sweet bread + cold ice cream? Yes. Always yes.

Osaka Castle at Night

Before heading back, we made a quick stop at Osaka Castle. We accidentally bought tickets for a cheesy light show, laughed our way through it, then walked up to the castle on our own. Seeing it lit up at night was so worth it. The white walls glowed against the sky, and there were barely any people around. It was peaceful in a different way than Kyoto, quiet, but with a city buzz in the distance.

Final Thoughts

We caught one of the last Shinkansen trains back to Kyoto, and even though the ride was only about 20 minutes, it felt like the perfect way to wind down after such a packed day. By the time we walked back into our hotel room, that familiar mix of exhaustion and happiness had settled in, the kind you only get after exploring two totally different cities in one day.

As I got ready for bed, I kept thinking about how much I’m loving Kyoto’s calm energy, especially after Osaka’s loud, bright chaos. It made the return feel comforting, almost like slipping back into something soft and familiar.

Discovering Kyoto: What to See, Do, and Expect on Your Visit

Day 3 in Japan started early and quietly as we got ready, grabbed breakfast, and made our way to Tokyo Station, which already felt familiar even though it was only our third morning in Japan. The station was busy as always, but everything flowed so seamlessly that we easily found our Shinkansen to Kyoto. The moment we stepped inside the bullet train, I finally understood the hype—the seats were wide and comfortable, the windows were huge, and the ride was incredibly smooth. We chose seats on the right side, hoping to catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji, and we were lucky enough to get an apparent view of it glowing in the morning light. I even caught it on video (check my IG post here!), and that alone made the ride unforgettable. About two hours later, we arrived in Kyoto, where the atmosphere instantly shifted; the city felt softer, calmer, and full of history. After dropping off our luggage at the hotel, we went straight out to explore its quiet streets, wooden houses, cafés, and hidden shrines.

First Stop: Kennin-ji Temple

Our first destination was Kennin-ji Temple, the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto and one of the most important. Walking through the entrance, everything felt instantly peaceful. The noise of the city faded, replaced by soft footsteps, the sound of wind brushing through trees, and occasional chimes.

The temple buildings were elegant but straightforward, exactly what you expect from traditional Zen architecture. Clean lines, open spaces, sliding doors, and tatami floors that made you want to walk slowly and breathe a little deeper.

The gardens were the kind that make you pause for no reason. Raked gravel patterns, soft moss, perfectly placed stones, and glimpses of fall colors starting to show. It all felt intentional and calming.

One of my favorite things I learned: the first abbot of Kennin-ji is the monk who helped popularize green tea in Japan. I love little details like that, how one person can influence an entire country’s culture in such a lasting way.

Lunch at Dos Tacos Yasaka

After the temple, we were ready for lunch. We found Dos Tacos Yasaka, a small taco shop that turned out to be pure magic.

Let me say this clearly: I grew up in Arizona. I know good tacos. I’ve eaten great tacos my whole life. And these? These were truly some of the best tacos I’ve ever had.

The flavors were bold and fresh, everything was seasoned perfectly, and the tortillas tasted like they were made with love. I kept taking bite after bite in disbelief. Layton agreed—they were the best food of the trip so far.

I’m not joking when I say I’m considering eating there every day for lunch while we’re in Kyoto. That’s how good they were.

Exploring Gion in the Rain

After lunch, we walked through Gion, Kyoto’s famous historic district. The rain had started by then, but instead of ruining the mood, it made everything feel even more charming.

The stone streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka glistened under the rain, and the wooden buildings looked even more picturesque with water running down their roofs. These streets always have tourists, but because of the weather, the crowds were thinner. It felt quieter and more intimate than usual.

After lunch, we walked through Gion, Kyoto’s famous historic district. The rain had started by then, but instead of ruining the mood, it made everything feel even more charming.

Closing Thoughts

As our third day in Japan wrapped up, I found myself wondering how easy and enjoyable the whole day felt. Kyoto had a calm vibe that I really loved—quiet temples, small streets, and that light rain that somehow made everything look even prettier. We didn’t rush around or try to squeeze in too much. Instead, we took our time, explored at a comfortable pace, and just enjoyed whatever we stumbled into. Even the simple moments stood out, like eating those insanely good tacos, walking through Gion with our umbrellas, or relaxing back at the hotel while the rain tapped on the windows.

It was one of those days that wasn’t overly planned but still felt really special. Every little moment added something good to the day, and by the time I got into bed that night, I felt tired in the best way, calm, happy, and excited for what’s next.

A Day Trip to Mt. Fuji

The Day 2 of our Japan adventure began bright and early in Tokyo. After a full first day exploring the city, we were ready for a completely different kind of experience: a trip to Mt. Fuji.

We woke up at 6 AM, still half-asleep but excited for the adventure ahead. Tokyo was quiet at this hour, but one thing is always open: 7-Eleven. We grabbed their fluffy pancakes, simple, warm, and honestly, the perfect quick breakfast, and headed straight to the bus station.

We planned to take a two-hour bus ride from Tokyo to Mt. Fuji. Everyone always says seeing the full mountain is hit or miss, so we kept our expectations low and just hoped for a bit of luck.

The First Look at Mt. Fuji

As the bus rolled out of the city, the view slowly changed from tall buildings to quiet towns, fields, and wide stretches of green. It felt like the deeper we went into the countryside, the calmer everything became.

And then, there she was. Mt. Fuji, clear and bright, standing tall with no clouds hiding her peak. I remember staring out the window thinking, Is this real? We really had the perfect weather.

We headed toward the famous viewpoint at Chureito Pagoda. The walk included a lot of stairs (my legs definitely felt it), but reaching the top was worth every step. The pagoda’s red structure framed the mountain so beautifully that all I could do was stand there quietly, taking it all in.

The air was crisp, the sun was warm, and for a moment, it felt like time slowed down just for us.

Chureito Pagoda: A Postcard-Perfect View

Our stop at Chureito Pagoda was one of the day’s highlights. After getting off the bus, we followed a quiet path through a small town until we reached the staircase leading up to the pagoda. It’s almost 400 steps, and yes, it feels long, but every pause gave us a wider view of the town below.

At the top, the pagoda appeared—a tall, bright red, five-tiered structure built as a memorial to peace. The air was cooler, the trees were just starting to turn for early fall, and everything felt calm and peaceful.

And then I turned toward the open sky and saw Mt. Fuji, clear, glowing under the sun. Not a single cloud. It was one of those moments where you stop talking without even realizing it. Everyone around us shared that same quiet awe.

Chureito Pagoda is famous for cherry blossoms in spring and fiery colors in autumn, but even on an ordinary day, the view feels magical. The pagoda, the valley, and Mt. Fuji all line up like a scene from a postcard. After all the climbing, seeing that view made every step worth it.

When the Clouds Start to Roll In

But Mt. Fuji is known to be shy. Slowly, clouds began gathering around the peak. A thin line first, then thicker and thicker. By noon, the mountain was fading. By 1 PM, she was completely gone behind a blanket of white.

We had hoped to see that classic postcard view at Lake Kawaguchiko, but the sky had different plans. The lake was peaceful, but Mt. Fuji was nowhere in sight.

Was it disappointing? A little. But I felt grateful that we saw it clearly even for part of the day—many people visit and never see the mountain at all.

Side Note: Buy the Fruit

One thing that surprised me was the number of fruit vendors in the area. Stands were filled with bright grapes, strawberries, apples, and persimmons. The colors alone made everything look like fall.

We grabbed a mix to snack on—grapes, strawberries, apples, and a persimmon (my first time trying one!). Everything tasted incredibly fresh. If you visit the area, buy the fruit. Truly worth it.

The Long Ride Back & The Food Hunt

When it was time to head back, we boarded the bus expecting another two-hour ride to Tokyo, but traffic had other plans. The trip dragged on much longer, and by then, the jet lag hit me full force. Days of moving around—planes, trains, buses—finally caught up with me. My body felt stiff from sitting too long, my eyes were heavy, and all I could think about was laying down on a real bed.

So when we finally reached Tokyo and walked into our hotel room, the feeling was heavenly. I dropped onto the bed and felt like I could melt into it. But the moment I started to relax, my stomach reminded me that I hadn’t eaten a proper meal all day.

Tokyo is full of amazing food like ramen shops, yakitori stalls, donburi restaurants. But what I wanted wasn’t any of those. I was craving something simple: a sandwich. We ended up finding Kua Aina Sandwich Shop, a cozy Hawaiian-style place nearby. I ordered a turkey and avocado sandwich with french fries, and that first bite felt like a warm hug after a long day. Comfort food just hits different when you’re tired, and it was exactly what I needed.

The Long Ride Back & The Food Hunt

Today may have been long, tiring, and full of unexpected twists, but it reminded me why I love traveling so much. Even when things don’t go perfectly—the clouds rolling in, the long bus ride, the heavy jet lag—there are still moments that make everything worth it. That clear morning view of Mt. Fuji, the quiet beauty at Chureito Pagoda, the sweet fruit from local vendors, and the simple comfort of a warm sandwich at night… all of it blended into a day I’ll remember for a long time.

1-Day Tokyo Itinerary: Make the Most of Your Time in Japan’s Bustling Capital

If you’re planning a trip to Japan, chances are Tokyo will be your first stop. It’s a city where old traditions meet modern life, where temples sit next to neon-lit shopping streets. After two days of travel, finally stepping into Tokyo feels like a reward in itself. During our 7-day Japan adventure, we spent our first full day exploring Tokyo, and it turned out to be the perfect start. Here’s how you can make the most of one full day in Tokyo, visiting must-see spots like Gotokuji Temple, Zojo-ji Temple, Ginza, Shibuya, and Shinjuku, all while keeping things relaxed and enjoyable.

Morning at Gotokuji Temple — The Birthplace of the Lucky Cat

We started our day early, around 7 a.m. and headed to Gotokuji Temple in Setagaya. This peaceful temple is said to be the birthplace of the Maneki-neko, or the “beckoning cat” charm often seen in shops and restaurants.

The story behind it is pretty heartwarming. According to legend, a feudal lord once took shelter under a tree during a thunderstorm when he noticed a cat waving at him. He followed it into the temple, and just after, lightning struck the spot he had been standing. Grateful to the cat for saving him, he became a patron of the temple, and that’s how the lucky cat became a symbol of good fortune.

When you visit Gotokuji, you’ll see hundreds of little cat figurines placed around the grounds, in rows, on steps, and in corners. It’s charming, calm, and surprisingly photogenic. You can even buy your own Maneki-neko charm at the temple shop. Make sure to check directions and hours on Google Maps before heading there, as the temple is tucked in a quiet residential area.

Zojo-ji Temple and Tokyo Tower

From Gotokuji, we hopped on the Tokyo Metro and made our way to Zojo-ji Temple in Minato City. This Buddhist temple dates back to the 14th century and is known for its incredible backdrop, the Tokyo Tower rising right behind it.

It’s a great photo spot because you get a mix of traditional Japanese architecture and modern Tokyo in one frame. The temple grounds are spacious, peaceful, and surrounded by trees, making it a nice escape from the city’s buzz. If you visit during cherry blossom season (around late March to early April), the area turns into a stunning pink canopy.

If you want to go up Tokyo Tower afterwards, it’s only a short walk from Zojo-ji. The observation decks give you a panoramic view of the city, and on clear days, you might even spot Mount Fuji in the distance.

Lunch in Ginza — Trying Ramen at Tsujita

After exploring the temples, it was time for lunch. We took the subway to Ginza, one of Tokyo’s most upscale neighbourhoods known for luxury shopping and sleek architecture. Even if you’re not into shopping, Ginza is worth visiting for its atmosphere, clean streets, stylish storefronts, and great restaurants.

We had lunch at Tsujita Ginza, a well-known ramen restaurant famous for its rich broth and thick noodles. If you’re new to ramen, this is a good place to try it because it’s flavorful without being too heavy. We ordered the house special and loved it. It was hearty and perfect after a morning of walking.

If you plan to go during lunchtime, try to come early or after 1:30 p.m., as lines can get long. Many Tokyo ramen spots use vending machines for ordering, so have cash ready or ask staff for help if you’re unsure.

Afternoon Rest and Shibuya Adventure

After lunch, we headed back to our hotel for a quick nap. Tokyo days can be long, and it’s worth resting before heading out again at night. Around sunset, we made our way to Shibuya, one of Tokyo’s most famous districts and home to the iconic Shibuya Scramble Crossing.

Standing in the middle of the world’s busiest pedestrian crossing is an experience you can’t miss. Every few minutes, hundreds of people walk in all directions as the lights turn green. To get the best view, go to the second floor of the Shibuya Tsutaya Starbucks — it overlooks the crossing and makes for amazing photos.

We also checked out the Pokémon Center Shibuya and the Godzilla Store, both great for unique souvenirs. If you love Japanese pop culture, these shops are worth exploring. For affordable fashion, we dropped by Uniqlo Shibuya, where we found jackets and sweaters for the cool autumn evenings.

Dinner in Shinjuku — From Omoide Yokocho to Sushi Omi

As night fell, we took the train to Shinjuku, another lively district known for its nightlife and food scene. Our first stop was Omoide Yokocho, which literally means “Memory Lane.” It’s a narrow alleyway filled with tiny food stalls and bars serving grilled skewers (yakitori), noodles, and sake. The atmosphere is lively, smoky, and full of character, like stepping back into post-war Japan.

We loved the energy, but the smoke got a bit heavy, so we decided to find another spot for dinner. A short walk away, we found Sushi Ōmi Shinjuku, a small sushi restaurant that offered an eight-course set meal. We didn’t know what to expect and ordered without checking the menu. Some dishes were incredible, especially the nigiri sushi, while others (like fermented sea bream) were more adventurous.

Ending the Day with a View of Tokyo Tower

We got back to our hotel around 10 p.m., tired but happy. From our window, we could see the Tokyo Tower glowing in the distance — the perfect way to end our first day in Japan. The weather stayed pleasant throughout, hovering around the mid-60s Fahrenheit, which made all the walking bearable.

Start early to avoid crowds at temples.
Use a Suica or Pasmo card for smooth subway travel. You can even add it to your phone via Apple Wallet or Google Pay.
