Spending Christmas on a tropical island sounded like the perfect plan. So this year, Layton and I packed our bags and flew to Roatán, one of the beautiful Caribbean islands of Honduras.

We had actually visited two years ago and had such an amazing experience free diving the reefs that we couldn’t stop thinking about going back. The water was clear, the coral was vibrant, and the marine life felt endless. Ever since that first trip, we knew we wanted to return.

So this Christmas, we did exactly that. Our plan was simple: spend most of our days in the water exploring the reef again.

A Slow and Rainy Start

The first few days of the trip were… honestly a little boring. Instead of bright sunshine and calm water, the island greeted us with clouds and rain. Some mornings looked promising, but the rain would start again, or the sky stayed too dark for good snorkeling or diving conditions.

Since the main reason we came to Roatán was for the reefs, it was a bit frustrating at first. But when you’re traveling, sometimes the best thing you can do is adjust your expectations and enjoy what’s available.

We explored parts of the island and spent time in West Bay, grabbing food and walking along the beach. West Bay is one of the most popular areas on the island, and it’s easy to see why. The sand is soft, the water is clear, and the reef sits just offshore.

We also stopped by a local brewery in Roatán one afternoon to wait out the rain. It turned out to be a fun way to spend a gray day — good drinks, easy conversation, and a break from staring at the weather forecast.

While those first few days weren’t the adventure we expected, they gave us time to slow down and just enjoy being on the island.

The Day the Sun Finally Came Out

Then, on our last full day, everything changed. We woke up to bright sunshine and clear skies. After several days of clouds and rain, it felt like the island had completely transformed overnight. Naturally, we grabbed our snorkel gear and headed straight for the water.

One of the best things about West Bay is how easy it is to access the reef. You don’t need a boat ride or a guided tour. You can simply swim out from the beach and reach the reef within minutes.

As soon as we entered the water, we remembered exactly why we love this place. The reef was alive with color and movement. We floated above coral formations while fish moved through the reef in every direction. It felt like watching an underwater city.

Even though we only had one real day of snorkeling, it turned into an incredible underwater experience. Every few minutes, we discovered something new.

Moments like that are exactly why we travel.

For our final night on the island, we headed to Bananarama Beach and Dive Resort for dinner and drinks. The place has a lively beach atmosphere with music, tables in the sand, and the ocean just steps away.

At one point, we joined a hermit crab race happening at the bar. Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like: tiny hermit crabs slowly racing across a table while people cheer for their chosen crab.

It was one of those random travel moments that make a trip memorable. Later that evening, we watched a fire show on the beach. Performers spun flames against the dark sky while the sound of the ocean filled the background. It was a fun and relaxed way to end our final night in Roatán.

Why Roatán Keeps Pulling Us Back

Even though the trip didn’t start the way we expected, it reminded us why we keep returning to Roatán. The island has a relaxed energy, beautiful beaches, and some of the best accessible reefs we’ve experienced.

Most importantly, the marine life here is incredible. Whether you’re snorkeling or free diving, the underwater world feels alive and constantly changing.

We only had one perfect day of snorkeling this trip. But sometimes, one amazing day is all it takes to remind you why you came in the first place.

As we packed our bags to leave Roatán, we were already talking about where our next underwater adventure might take us.

5-Day Costa Rica Itinerary | Exploring Guanacaste and Arenal

In December 2019, I went to Costa Rica for 5-days with my friend and fellow travel blogger, Jasmine. This was our first time visiting, and even though we did much research, we were a little nervous about driving through the country alone. There are a lot of different opinions on the internet. Still, from our experience driving around the Guanacaste Province and Arenal region, we felt safe and would highly recommend renting a car. Hiring a taxi can be expensive, and going with a tour group can slow you down. So, if you want to save money and time, drive yourself. Below, you’ll find a detailed Costa Rica itinerary and some tips to help make planning your trip simple! This itinerary is perfect for those seeking luxury and adventure, but you can always change it to fit your wants and needs. Just think of this as a guideline. Enjoy!

There are so many places to see in Costa Rica that if you aren’t staying for two weeks, you’ll have to be selective. Since we only had five days, including travel days, we chose to fly into Liberia due to its proximity to the ocean and volcanoes. The beach is only 40 minutes from the airport, and the nearest volcano is one hour away. Getting to both is quite easy, and the drive takes you through some of Costa Rica’s most beautiful landscapes.

Day 1 of Costa Rica Itinerary: Arrive in Liberia & Drive to La Fortuna

You have arrived in Liberia, Costa Rica! Once you grab your bags through the terminal, follow the signs outside to find your rental car company’s shuttle bus. We rented with Alamo, which I recommend! After a two-minute shuttle ride, we reached their office and were on our way within 30 minutes.

Tip: There aren’t many restaurants along the highways, so grab some lunch in Liberia before the journey. If you’re not comfortable enough yet to stop somewhere local, there are food chains like McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, and KFC right off the main road, and all could suffice for your Costa Rica itinerary.

The drive to La Fortuna in the Arenal region is long but beautiful. The three-hour ride on Route 1 and Route 142 takes you through grasslands and into the rainforest. Along the way, you will see a few different volcano peaks in the distance and drive past the largest lake in Costa Rica, Lake Arenal. The highways and roads are well-paved and have many speed limit signs. However, if you’re using a GPS or Google Maps, stay on the main roads as you get closer to La Fortuna. Digital maps will often try to take you the quickest route, sometimes leading you to narrow, rough country roads.

Note: If your plane arrives after 3 pm, you may drive in the dark for part of the journey. While the drive is safe, it does become pitch-black after sunset, and there aren’t many signs directing you to your destination. Plus, you are headed inland towards the rainforest and will likely encounter heavy rain or fog. If you are uncomfortable with this, consider flipping this itinerary. However, you will be fine if you’re comfortable driving in a foreign country and have a reliable navigation system. Just keep calm, follow the directions, and you’ll make it to your destinations safe and sound.

As you get closer to the town of La Fortuna, you’ll start to see the peak of Arenal Volcano. There are many accommodations nearby, ranging from Airbnb to luxury resorts. We stayed at Arenal Kioro Suites and Spa, which costs around $386 a night. This green-friendly luxury hotel located ten minutes from the town of La Fortuna overlooks the magnificent volcano and has hot springs on the property.

You’ll arrive sometime in the afternoon, most likely exhausted from the many hours of non-stop travel. So take this time to unwind on your Costa Rica itinerary. The good news is you don’t have to go far to relax. All rooms are equipped with a hot tub for you to soak and enjoy the incredible views of the volcano from the comfort of your room. You can also head to the Titokú Hot Springs – about a 5-minute walk down a jungle path from your room. There are eight hot spring pools with varying temperatures and sizes. From these springs, you can watch the sunset on Arenal Volcano.

For dinner, try the hotel’s on-site restaurants, Heliconias and Orquídeas. Heliconias is the signature restaurant with a la carte local and international specialties. Orquídeas is located by the pool with views of the gardens and volcano, serving themed dinners in a casual setting. We dined there the first night and enjoyed a Chinese buffet. The entire patio was covered with red paper lanterns and other ornamental decorations while Chinese music played over the speakers – solidifying the theme. Overall, the food and experience were fantastic!

After dinner, we got ready for bed. It was a long day, and if you plan to explore the surrounding Arenal region, you’ll need to rest.

Day 2: Explore The Area Around Arenal Volcano

Rise and shine! While you can choose to sleep in, you’ll definitely get the most out of your day by waking up early.

Before you head out, grab some food from the FREE breakfast buffet at Heliconias. They open at 6:30 am and offer a variety of food ranging from cereals to avocado toast. Once you’ve had your fill, let the adventure begin!

There are many activities and tours around the Arenal Volcano, including horseback riding, whitewater rafting, canopy tours, and more to add to your Costa Rica itinerary. Below are a few great things to do and see during your stay. You can choose which you’d like to do depending on your level of adventure, but I promise you won’t regret a single one.

La Fortuna Waterfall

Falling 70 meters over a jungle cliff and into a jade-colored pool, it’s no wonder this waterfall is one of the most visited in Costa Rica. While La Fortuna Waterfall is an absolute ‘must-see’ attraction, the only way to reach it is by hiking down a 500-step staircase through the rainforest. But don’t worry, it’s not so bad. Walking down only takes about 15 minutes and 25 minutes to hike back up. I saw people of all ages, shapes, and sizes easily making their way up and down.

The La Fortuna Waterfall Visitor’s Center is easy to find. It has a parking lot, bathrooms, a small cafe, and a souvenir store at the entrance. Parking is free, but there is an entrance fee of $20 for adults and $5 for children.

Hike Around Arenal Volcano

Between 1968 and 2010, Arenal Volcano was extremely active, averaging 41 daily eruptions! However, the volcano is resting, making it safe to get close and explore. While there is no way to hike up to the 1,657-meter-tall volcano, a few trails take you around the base through lava fields and lush rainforests. Due to safety reasons, you should only hike along well-maintained trails in the national park or other private reserves.

Arenal National Park is open from 8 am to 4 pm and costs $15 for adults and $5 for children. The park’s most popular trails include Sendero Colada 1968, Tucanes, Coladas de Lava (Lava flow), Los Heliconias, and El Ceibo. All of these are relatively short, so you can do multiple in a day if you choose.

One of the best trails, Arenal 1968, is on a private reserve next to the national park. The reserve is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and costs $17 for adults, while children under the age of 12 are free. There are two trails—Lava Flow 1968 and Trail Forest 1968. The total distance combined is about 7km and can be done in one day.

Most trails in the area are flat and easy to walk. However, you should still come prepared with appropriate hiking shoes, water, and a waterproof bag in case of rain.

Tip: While you do not need a guide or tour to hike these trails, it’s recommended if you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of the wildlife hidden amongst the vegetation. A guide can help you spot white-faced capuchin monkeys, deer, coati, and snakes. Be sure to take note of this for the rest of your Costa Rica itinerary. There aren’t many sloths in the national park, so if that’s what you’ve come to see, visit the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges (which you can read more about in the next section).

Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges

While Costa Rica only accounts for 0.03% of the earth’s surface, it contains nearly 6% of the world’s biodiversity. Since there is so much natural wealth in both species and ecosystems, Costa Rica sought out to preserve its biodiversity through National Parks, Reserves, and Protected Areas. Today, over 25.6% of the country (an area of 1342 hectares) is protected.

Near Arenal, one family wanted to preserve 600 acres of land while offering visitors a safe environment to enjoy the rainforest sustainably. Hence, they created the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges, which provide a unique perspective of the forest from above. So if you’re interested in learning about the Arenal rainforest and wildlife (this is where you can see sloths), definitely pay them a visit!

The Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges are open from 6am till 4pm, and entrance costs $26 for adults, $16 for teens (11-18), and children are free. Walking through the entire park is 3.2 km and takes around 2.5 hours. You can choose to explore on your own or go with a guided tour for an additional price whichever you plan for your Costa Rica itinerary.

Arenal Hot Springs

One of the main reasons people come to visit Arenal is the beautiful natural hot springs. Even though the volcano is dormant, the geothermal pools remain warm and offer visitors a most relaxing experience.

Since we stayed at the Arenal Kioro Suites and Spa, we didn’t feel the need to visit more hot springs. But if you’re interested, these are some of the best options for your Costa Rica itinerary: Tabacon Hot Springs, The Springs, Eco-Termales Hot Springs, and Baldi Hot Springs. I’ve ordered them from the most luxurious to most affordable.

Fun Fact: The Bachelor of season 24, Peter Weber, aka Pilot Pete, brought the contestants to La Fortuna and stayed at The Springs Resort and Spa.

If you want to enjoy the hot springs without the price, a few springs are off the beaten path. Down the road from Tabacón, there is a small bridge crossing the river Río Chollín. If you’re brave enough to climb down the hill next to the bridge, you’ll find natural geothermal pools that are totally free! Since this isn’t a regulated spring, exercise caution before hopping in.

After this fun-filled day exploring the beautiful area of La Fortuna, head back to the hotel, eat some dinner, soak in the hot springs or hot tub, and go to bed. It’s time to rest before another exciting day of travel and adventure!

Day 3: Drive to Four Seasons Resort at Papagayo Peninsula

You have two options this morning: Sleep in or wake up early and visit a magical turquoise blue river.

Option 1: Sleep in.

Check-out time at Arenal Kioro Suites and Spa is noon, so there’s no need to rush. Once you wake up, grab some free breakfast at the buffet and soak in views of the volcano. Maybe even head down to the Titokú Hot Springs one last time. Once the clock strikes noon, it’s time to head out.

Option 2: Wake up early and visit a magical blue river.

Wake up around 6 a.m., get some breakfast, and drive 2 hours to Rio Celeste (on Google Maps and Waze, put in “Rio Celeste Waterfall Parking“).

The Celeste River is located in Tenorio Volcano National Park and is known for its distinctive turquoise color and large waterfall. Since it is close to a volcano, a few hot springs are nearby. The entrance to Tenorio Volcano National Park is $12 for adults and $5 for children (ages 2-12), and parking at the Rio Celeste Waterfall Parking lot is 2000 colones or $3.50 per car.

Tip: While this is a secure parking lot, don’t leave anything valuable in your car. If you have luggage, keep it hidden in the truck and park with more people as close as possible to the office and entrance.

The trail to Rio Celeste and the waterfall is a 3.7-mile round trip that takes about 2-3 hours to complete (including stops for photos). The hike isn’t challenging; however, the path can be muddy with a lot of rain. Bring good hiking shoes and a waterproof bag for your electronics.

Jasmine and I went with option one during our trip because we were too exhausted from hiking. However, if you have the energy, don’t miss visiting Rio Celeste! which is a must for your Costa Rica itinerary.

Driving back to the Guanacaste coast from either Rio Celeste or Arenal will take 2-3 hours, and you should arrive around 3 p.m. The area offers a variety of accommodations, from luxury 5-star resorts to small boutique hotels, and as long as they’re along the beach, you can’t go wrong. During our trip, we stayed at the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Papagayo Peninsula, and it was fantastic!

The Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica is one of the most luxurious resorts in Central America. The property is situated on 45 acres across the Papagayo Peninsula. It has private access to two beaches, four swimming pools, a world-class spa, an 18-hole golf course, multiple dining options, and offers complementary activities. While the rooms are quite expensive (starting around $800 per night), if this is something you can afford, I highly recommend staying here! So, be sure to include it on your Costa Rica itinerary. It is one of my favorite properties, and I hope to return one day.

You’ll probably want to stretch your feet once you arrive at the resort and check into your room. Take this time to explore the hotel grounds. You can walk by the hotel restaurants to see what’s on the dinner menu, grab some refreshing drinks at the bar, dip in the pools, and walk along the beach at sunset. Just relax. Enjoy the luxurious amenities of the resort and the beauty of Costa Rica’s western coastline.

For dinner, check out Bahia, Pesce, or Añejo. Bahia is a sophisticated all-day restaurant with various dishes for dinner, ranging from beef burgers to vegetarian tacos. If you want something casual and light, try the tapas at Añejo. Pesce offers guests an elegant evening with dimly lit lights, a panoramic ocean, and classic Italian cuisine. All three restaurants are great – it just depends on what you’re in the mood for – so you really can’t go wrong!

If you still have energy after dinner, go for a swim in the pool or head to the beach for stargazing. It’s insane how many stars you can see at Playa Virador with the naked eye!

Day 4: Explore the Papagayo Peninsula

Slowly wake up and enjoy a delicious cup of Costa Rican coffee on the patio while listening to the peaceful sounds of birds singing and waves crashing against the shore. If you’re hungry, head to Bahia for breakfast or grab an acai bowl at Añejo.

Once you’re all fueled up and ready to go, check out the hotel’s daily scheduled activities to include in your Costa Rica Itinerary. The Four Seasons offers over 25 complimentary activities and others that require a small fee. So, if you’re interested in doing more than lounge by the pool or relax at the spa, here are just a few fun activities for you to do throughout the day!

After breakfast, head down to Playa Blanca (located on the property) and meet your guide for a Snorkel Tour. From the beach, you’ll swim out into the bay and see beautiful coral reefs and the marine life of Culebra Bay on your Costa Rica itinerary. While you snorkel, your guide will point out different fish species and share their knowledge of the surrounding water.

Once you’ve returned to shore, rest on the beach or continue your adventure by taking Surfing Lessons! The Four Seasons Resorts is the closest resort to the famous waves of Witch’s Rock and Ollies Point. You can set up lessons with the concierge desk and partner with the luxury surf school Tropicsurf. You’ll be transported to the school by boat and have a one-on-one session with an instructor who will have you riding the waves in no time.

If you’ve decided to snorkel and surf, you’ll probably be tired and need sustenance by noon. Bahia is the perfect spot for lunch, with tasty dishes such as mahi-mahi tacos, grilled chicken sandwiches, and Caesar salad.

At 1:30 pm most days, the Four Seasons Resort offers the complimentary Trail of the Giants Golf Course Tour. A shuttle will pick you and other guests up from the lobby and take you to the golf clubhouse. From there, you’ll select a golf cart and begin your tour around the course. Your guide will stop at beautiful viewpoints to talk about the local vegetation and wildlife of the Papagayo Peninsula. You’ll also see some white-faced and howler monkeys in the tall trees along the trail!

Once the tour ends, head to the bar at Añejo. Relax and enjoy a few refreshments and snacks on the outdoor patio.

At 4 pm, walk next door to La Reserva to do the complimentary Chocolate Rum Tasting! You can try five different rums combined with Costa Rican Chocolate! After the tasting, head to Playa Virador to watch the sunset.

If you still have energy after this very active day, go on the Moonlit Kayak Tour. There are other kayak excursions offered, but the moonlit tour is unique. After sunset, you’ll meet with a guide and kayak out to Blanca Bay. LED lights are attached to the bottom of the kayaks so you can see the dark water below. While the marine life may be less active now, you’ll have fantastic coast views and start seeing thousands of stars appear over the horizon.

Once you return to shore, head to your room and clean up before a late-night dinner at Pesce. It’s been an eventful day, so sit back and unwind with a glass of red wine and a delicious Cioppino!

Day 5 Costa Rica Itinerary: Relax & Depart

Depending on the time of your flight, you have two options for spending your final hours in Costa Rica.

Option 1: Relax at the Four Seasons Resort.

Check-out time is from 12 pm to 2 pm, so if all you want to do is savor the luxury experience at the Four Seasons Resort, do just that. You can chill by the pool or partake in scheduled morning activities—it’s up to your planned Costa Rica Itinerary.

Option 2: Explore more beaches in Guanacaste Province.

If you want to see a little more of Costa Rica before you leave, pack up and head out to some other beaches nearby, like Ocotal Beach, Conchal Beach, and Playa Flamingo. These beaches are considered to be the best with public access. However, I still think Playa Virador at the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica is more beautiful. Plus, it’s private.

If you decide to visit Playa Flamingo for your Costa Rica itinerary, a 1.5-hour drive from the Four Seasons Resort, swing by Las Catalinas. This new beach town is on the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by 1,000 acres of tropical dry forest hills and valleys – perfect for hiking and biking. The city is completely car-free and comprises houses, small hotels and inns, shops, restaurants, pedestrian streets, plazas, parks, and recreational facilities. Once complete, Las Catalinas will be the perfect haven for connecting with nature, locals, and other travelers.

Tip: If you consider adding another day to your trip by staying in Las Catalinas, book a night at the Santana Hotel. They have a beautiful property and a fantastic infinity pool!

What I would have done differently . . .

In my original Costa Rica itinerary, we only did one day in La Fortuna and added a day in Las Catalinas instead. This was a mistake. Since the town is still being developed, hardly anything was open, and overall, there wasn’t much to do. Plus, you could hear the construction going on throughout the day. While the town will eventually be a lovely place to vacation, I wish we had spent more time exploring the Arenal region.

Also, reaching Las Catalinas is tricky. The route takes you through a few river wash crossings along a dirt road. If the streets are flooded, like when we visited, you must find an alternative route. There are no signs to help you, and it’s in the middle of nowhere, so there isn’t a lot of traffic. Luckily, a random car passed us, and we knew enough Spanish to ask for directions. If you’re interested in visiting, just research and keep informed of the town’s progress.

Overall, Costa Rica exceeded my expectation and has quickly become one of my favorite destinations in the world. I hope I get the change to explore even more of this beautiful country! As always, my thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Ultimate Guide To La Fortuna Waterfall In Costa Rica

La Fortuna Waterfall — meaning “the fortune” in Spanish — is one of the most visited waterfalls in all of Costa Rica. Located in the Alajuela Province, the waterfall is fed by the Arenal River, which travels through the rainforest in the Arenal Mountain range until it drops around 200 feet or 70 meters over a cliff.

At the waterfall’s base is a jade-colored pool surrounded by mossy hillsides, huge boulders, and a jungle landscape. The scene is so tranquil one could easily spend the entire day sunbathing and enjoying the cool touch of the waterfall’s mist.

While La Fortuna Waterfall is a little slice of heaven, the only way to reach it is by putting yourself through a little bit of hell.

To visit this gorgeous waterfall, you must trek down a 500-step staircase constructed into the hillside. Walking down only takes about 10 minutes and 20 minutes to hike back up to the parking lot, which may be difficult for those with knee issues. However, if you are healthy and able, I highly recommend visiting!

Common Questions About La Fortuna Waterfall:

Where is the waterfall located, and how can I get there?

La Fortuna Waterfall is located in central Costa Rica, about 5.5 km outside of the town of La Fortuna. To reach the entrance to the falls, you can drive yourself or take a taxi. The taxi ride will cost around $15 one way from the town of La Fortuna. The roads are decently paved, and if you plug the address below into Google Maps, you’ll have no problem finding the visitors center.

Where can I park?

There is a big parking lot (25+ spots) as well as bathrooms, a small cafe, and a souvenir store at the entrance. Parking is free. Since this is such a popular place to visit, I recommend going early for a guaranteed parking spot. If not, you may have to park further away or wait for others to leave

Is there an entrance fee?

Yes! The La Fortuna Waterfall entrance fee is $20 for adults and $5 for children. The good news is that they take both cash and credit cards.

What are the hours of operation?

La Fortuna Waterfall opens every day between 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. To beat the big tour buses, go at opening or later in the afternoon.

Are there restrooms?

Yes, there are bathrooms at the visitors center, but none after you start the hike. So be sure to do your business before your journey down to the falls.

How long is the hike?

As previously stated, the hike to La Fortuna Waterfall is down 500 steps. The trek down takes 10 – 15 minutes while the hike back up takes around 20 – 30 minutes. Every hundred steps or so are small rest areas with benches for those who need a break.

Can you swim at the waterfall?

Since the waterfall current is strong and there are jagged rocks in the plunging cascade pool, it is too dangerous for swimming. However, there are calmer and safer pools downstream. These natural pools have sandy bottoms and such clear waters that you can actually see silver dart river fish!

What should I bring?

Money. You’ll need either cash or a card to pay the entrance fee, but also if you want to purchase food or souvenirs.
Tennis shoes or water shoes. Since it rains a lot in this region of Costa Rica, the staircase leading down to the waterfall is typically wet and slippery. The same goes for the boulders around the pools near the waterfall. This being said, it’s essential to have shoes with some grip so you don’t lose your balance and fall.
Swimsuit. If you plan to swim in the natural pools below the falls, yes. However, I would even recommend wearing a swimsuit if you don’t want to swim. Again, since this is a very wet region in Costa Rica, you’ll most likely get wet anyway from rain.

Waterproof bag. For those bringing any expensive photography equipment or electronics (like a phone), make sure to have something waterproof to keep it in. It’ll protect from both the rain and heavy mist from the waterfall.

Water. There is no drinking water once you head down the staircase, so bring at least one bottle per person. You’ll need to replenish your body with water lost from the humidity and hike.

Snacks. The only food you can purchase is at the cafe by the visitor’s center, so pack a light snack to boost your energy for the hike.

A Step-By-Step Guide To La Fortuna Waterfall:

Part 1: Entrance to the Overlook

Once you purchase your ticket and get your wristbands at the visitor’s center, you’ll walk along the road and through a gate. A security guard will verify your ticket and wave you through towards the start of the hike. A huge platform at the beginning of the trail overlooks the jungle and the La Fortuna Waterfall. From here, you’ll turn left and descend the stairs.

Part 2: Overlook to the Falls

There are different sections of the stairs heading towards the falls. It starts off as paved asphalt and, throughout the hik,e changes from cut rocks to metal to wood – depending on the landscape’s topography. Secure handrails are along the staircase, and as I mentioned earlier, a few benches are scattered throughout the hike.

For the first 5 minutes of the hike, you’ll go down switchbacks, and then it continues straight down for another 5 minutes. Once you start to feel the cool breeze and mist of the waterfall, you know you’re starting to get close. The last hundred steps are wet and slippery, so take your time and use the handrails.

Part 3: La Fortuna Waterfall

Once you plateau and cross the bridge, La Fortuna Waterfall will be to your right. You can continue walking towards the base of the falls or take a few short stairs up to a small concrete platform in front of the cascade.

After you’ve soaked in the gorgeous view and taken all your pictures, follow the path downstream. Walk for about 30 seconds, and you’ll find an oasis of small rapids and natural pools where you can swim. For those concerned with safety, there is a lifeguard on duty. You can leave your shoes and belongings on the sandy shore – but as always, keep a watchful eye.

I rank the La Fortuna Waterfall hike somewhere between easy and moderate. It is easy due to the length and good condition of the trail, and moderate because of the 500+ stairs and elevation gain. I saw people of all ages, shapes, and sizes completing this hike. Granted, some were quicker than others, but overall, this trek is perfect for all ages.

The Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica is one of the most luxurious resorts in Central America. Located on the Papagayo Peninsula, this 5-star resort sprawls across 45 acres of the jungle. Guests have private access to two beaches, four swimming pools, a world-class spa, an 18-hole golf course, multiple dining options, and complimentary classes and activities.

Four Seasons Resorts are known for having luxurious properties, but I was most impressed by the phenomenal service. When you arrive, you are greeted by name, welcomed with fresh coconut water, and offered a chilled towel! Also, every single staff member is extremely friendly. Not only do they stop to say hello, but they inquire about your day and ask if there iss anything you need. These small interactions differentiate between a good resort and a great one. The Four Seasons Costa Rica does a fantastic job of creating a warm and welcoming environment that genuinely makes you feel at home – something many in the hospitality industry cannot accomplish.

I spent two nights at the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica, and my only regret is that I didn’t stay longer. This resort ranks high amongst the properties I’ve stayed at, so I know I’ll be back sometime soon. But next time, I’ll be sure to book an entire week!

As a luxury resort, the Four Seasons Costa Rica has top-of-the-line accommodations. With over 180 guest rooms, suites, and private residence villas, you will find the perfect place to relax and enjoy your time in paradise. I enjoyed staying in one of the Terraza Guest Rooms during my visit.

Located on the bottom floor, the Terraza Rooms were designed after the treehouse concept with hardwood floors, natural fabrics, exotic colors, and outdoor living spaces. The room features two double or a king-sized bed, a full marble bathroom including a shower and tub, and a private patio with gorgeous views of the native tropical landscape. I was lucky enough to have partial views of the ocean!

Guest rooms also come with 100% cotton robes, tea and coffee service featuring coffee from Costa Rica, Ortigia bath amenities, a hairdryer, bottled water, and a plasma TV. Some other perks include twice-daily housekeeping service, evening turndown service, ice delivery, self-service washers and dryers with eco-friendly detergent, overnight shoeshine service, and 24-hour in-room dining.

Everything was perfect for my stay in the Terraza Room, from the design of the room to the service provided. One of my favorite things was opening the patio doors in the early morning. There’s nothing quite as relaxing as listening to the waves crash against the shore while lying in bed, wrapped in light cotton sheets.

Activites at the Four Seasons Costa Rica

At the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica, there are endless opportunities for fun and adventure! At check-in, you’ll receive a daily schedule with activities listed for the duration of your stay. The best part is that over 25 of these activities are complimentary, while others only require a small fee. So if you want to do more than lounge by the pool with a drink in your hand, here are some fun things to do around the property!

Surf Lessons. The Four Seasons Resort is the closest resort to the renowned waves of Witch’s Rock and Ollies Point, making it the perfect place to learn how to surf! The instructors at the luxury surf school Tropicsurf will quickly have you up and riding the waves in no time!

Morning Snorkel Tours. This 9:00 am tour is the perfect way to start your day! You’ll enter the bay from Playa Blanca (located on the property) and swim out into the bay. If the conditions are just right, the water will be clear enough for you to see colorful fish and beautiful coral reefs! Your guide will always be with you, sharing their knowledge of the Gulf of Papagayo and the surrounding marine life.

Bird Watching Tours. Due to Costa Rica’s location between the Americas, it is home to many tropical birds. During this tour, you’ll set out with a local guide and discover different species around the resort, like parrots, manakins, antbirds, robins, and trogons.

Guided Nature Hikes. The Papagayo Peninsula boasts a lush tropical landscape home to over 400 wildlife species. There are easy hikes along flat and well-maintained trails and more challenging treks for those looking for a little more adventure. The resort offers four hikes: Sunrise, Sunset, Mangrove, and Foreverwell. These guided hikes are a fun and educational way to safely explore the property on foot – perfect for children ages 12+.

Trail of the Giants Golf Course Tour. This is the best way to explore the Papagayo Peninsula and one of the most fun activities. Starting from the reception, you’ll ride a shuttle to the clubhouse, select a golf cart, and head out to explore the golf course. During this tour, your guide will stop at specific areas to share information about the local vegetation and wildlife. You may see some White-faced and Howler monkeys in the tall trees along the trail if you’re lucky!

Golf. The Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica course is a golfer’s dream. This par-72 championship course was designed by the legendary Arnold Palmer and offers some of the most spectacular ocean views of the Papagayo Peninsula. There is also a driving range, a sand-bunker practice area, and putting and chipping greens. Rates are $175 for 9 holes and $240 for 18 holes.

Chocolate Making Class. If you’re addicted to chocolate, this is one activity you cannot miss! The hands-on class takes you step-by-step through the chocolate-making process. You’ll learn how to roast, peel, and grind the cacao beans, but more importantly, you’ll get to eat the delicious treats after class.

Folkloric Dance Class. Learn all about the Punto Guanacasteco folk dance by listening to the music and following the steps of your instructors. The Punto Guanacasteco is considered the national dance, so this is a great interactive way to discover Costa Rican culture.

Star Gazing. While you can easily walk down to the beach late at night and stargaze alone, doing this as a resort activity is fun and informative. The guides point out constellations and let you peer through telescopes to get a closer view of the celestial bodies. Yes, the photo I took below while stargazing is enhanced, but you can see many stars with the naked eye!

Moonlit Kayak Tour. While the Four Season Resort offers seven kayak tours, I think the moonlit tour is the most unique! After sunset, you’ll meet with a guide and kayak out to Blanca Bay. The kayaks are retrofitted with LED lights for you to be able to see around and below the board. The marine life may not be as active now, but kayaking underneath the stars and taking in the beautiful night views is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Restaurants at the Four Seasons Costa Rica

Bahia – This is the perfect place to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner outside, with views of the pool and the Gulf of Papagayo. The food is fantastic, and I love that all ingredients are locally sourced. I especially enjoyed the variety of pastries in the breakfast buffet and the grilled beef burger for dinner. Oh, and don’t leave before trying their freshly made passionfruit juice! I drank multiple cups every morning, and to this day, I still crave it. If only they had delivered!

Añejo – If you’re looking to grab a breakfast bite to go or share some tapas with friends in the late afternoon, try Añejo. The open patio and light breeze add to its relaxing atmosphere during the day, but once the sun goes down and the drinks start flowing, it’s the perfect place to party.

Pesce – Featuring classic Italian cuisine and an extensive wine list, Pesce offers guests an evening of elegance. The dimly lit lights and panoramic ocean views create an intimate environment and romantic atmosphere – perfect for couples. There are so many great dishes to choose from; however, I recommend the Cioppino (catch of the day, shrimp, clams, sundried tomatoes, and grilled bread) and the Carpaccio Manzo (beef tenderloin, arugula salad, shaved grana padano, and truffle oil).

Nemare – Located at the Peninsula Papagayo golf clubhouse, Nemare offers lunch and dinner. The menu resembles a steakhouse, featuring craft cocktails, soups, salads, and grilled/smoked entrees. So, if you’re looking for the best steak on the property, check out Nemare.

Exploring Panama’s Hidden Gem: The San Blas Archipelago

Click, click, click, click. The ratchet slowly fell into place with each crank of the lever below. My hair flew around me as if I were in the middle of a hurricane, but being hoisted to the top of the mast was well worth the effort.

“How many can you see?” my husband shouted from the deck below.

Quickly glancing around, I counted 15 islands between me and the horizon in nearly all directions. We weren’t in Arizona anymore.

Over Easter weekend, we explored the San Blas archipelago in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Panama. The San Blas islands are relatively unknown to most, but they deserve to be much more famous. A group of picturesque islands inhabited only by the native Kuna tribe, the islands make for a magical experience.

The San Blas Islands

In San Blas, you can visit a different island every day of the year. With over 365 islands, the San Blas archipelago has something for everyone. Unfortunately, we were only able to really explore three of the islands: Banedup, Cambombia, and Pelicano. Each island offers a unique experience and view. As proof, a few years back, Microsoft Windows used a picture of San Blas Island as the default wallpaper (the one with only three palm trees).

The water in the archipelago is surprisingly deep between the islands, but the reefs surrounding each island make for excellent snorkeling. The deep water between the islands makes it easy for multiple types of ships to explore the island chain. San Blas is a popular sailing location for Central and South America.

Most of the islands are covered with palm trees. These trees help keep the islands “anchored” to the surrounding reef while also providing freshwater to the inhabitants. Obviously, this makes for some fun pictures!

Most of the islands are close to each other. There were multiple times we docked between a few islands and swam to each one. You feel like a pirate exploring new and virgin lands as you jump off your ship with a palm tree as your target. This is also a great time to snorkel. We explored a few different reefs around, and we were fortunate enough to see starfish, barracuda, tons of different schools of fish, and a stingray.

Word of warning: there are sharks in the islands, but most are small, with the most dangerous being the Tiger shark (which usually does not bother humans). The real danger is the caiman crocodile. These crocodiles are found on some uninhabited islands off the coast of Panama. They usually will avoid people and loud noises, but they did attack a woman last year. To avoid both sharks and crocodiles, don’t swim at night and stay in a group. Luckily, we didn’t see any sharks or crocodiles during our trip. If we had, I’m not sure I would have gotten back in the water!!

The Kuna Indians

One reason the San Blas Islands are not as well known as French Polynesia or The Bahamas is that they are 100% operated by the local tribe, the Kuna.

They are a small but proud community of around 300,000. Around 50,000 Kunas live on the 49 major islands of San Blas. The Kuna mainly survive by fishing and harvesting coconuts and other fruits. The Kuna allow tourists to dock on their islands for a small fee. Tourists are only allowed on a couple of islands in San Blas, and on these islands, the Kuna provide food and lodging year-round. On one of the major islands, Chichime, the Kuna run a hostel for tourists. This hostel provides open shelters with hammocks for a fee of around 10 US dollars; food is included in this price, but drinks are not. The Kunas themselves mostly live in small straw-and-wood huts on the islands, so expect camping tents or hammocks for your accommodations (see photo below).

The Kuna are a remarkable people. They are a matriarchal society, meaning all property is owned by the females. The Kuna has a participatory democracy. Every evening, everyone on the island gets together to discuss the day’s events and any issues that have arisen. Every few months, the residents of four or five islands get together to discuss larger issues that have come up. Twice a year, there are “regional” meetings. Regional issues are discussed, and actions are voted on. Once a year, there is a “nationwide” gathering where larger issues are discussed and courses of action voted on.

They are kind and more than happy to help out. We purchased some fresh coconut, lobsters, and shrimp from them during our trip. Most Kuna canoe into the waters to spearfish different fish and sea life. If they aren’t spearfishing, they are cutting down the fresh coconuts or napping along their beautiful island.

It is an amazing way of life that makes you rethink what you need to be happy.

Getting To San Blas

The San Blas islands are in the Caribbean Sea between Panama and Colombia. We were headed to Panama City, so it was easily worth the two-hour drive to the Caribbean coast and the two-hour sail into the islands. We ended up leaving from the Linton Bay Marina near Colon, Panama, on a catamaran we chartered through Sailing Life Experiences. Essentially, it’s an Airbnb for boats, so definitely check it out! If you depart from Colombia, it is a bit longer trip, but I imagine the reward is just as appealing.

There are a few ways to enjoy San Blas.

The most popular is by boat. You can charter a sailboat, like we did, for a few days. This allows you to explore a few different islands while sleeping and staying on the ship. You can also get a boat shuttle out to an island where you can pay to camp. This allows you to sleep on the island and enjoy the island life to the T.

There is an actual airstrip on the largest island, but there are very few flights. You’ll also have to find a way to get from that island to the others (which is where the boat comes in handy).

There are no resorts or hotels on the islands. Either you sleep under the stars on the island or under the stars on a ship. Whichever way you go, life will slow down, and you’ll enjoy the beauty surrounding you.

If you are ever in Panama, it is worth the extra few days to explore San Blas. You’ll discover a new way of life and see some of the most beautiful islands in the world.

Visiting Panama’s San Blas Islands With Sailing Life Experience

Have you ever wanted to see what life on the high seas would be like? Have you ever envied the pirate’s life? Do you dream of freedom and adventure?

If you said yes to any of these questions, do I have the vacation for you!

Sailors and the lives they live have always been more legend than reality for most of us. From Odysseus to Popeye, and from Christopher Columbus to Darwin, the men and women of the sea have inspired humanity to face their fears, explore the world, and cherish the freedom that the open water offers. It’s not an uncommon dream to sell all of your possessions, buy a boat, and sail off into the sunset. For a long weekend, we got to do exactly that!

Over Easter Weekend, Layton and I lived onboard a catamaran in the Caribbean waters of Panama. For four days and three nights, we became sailors. A vacation like no other!

The Sailing Life Experience

Our vacation was only possible through Sailing Life Experience.

Just as a hotel can make or break a vacation, a ship and its crew can make or break your sailing vacation!

We were blessed to join our captain, Giambattista, on his Outremer 55 Catamaran. Rounding out the crew was Giambattista’s son, Luca, and a French family from Panama City, who were on vacation like us.

Giambattista is not your average sea captain. In the “real world”, he was the COO of the public Italian internet company of Tiscali, CEO of his own IT consulting firm, and a Spanish & Italian GT Racing champion. In the sailing world, he is the first captain to ever pilot his catamaran to the Polar Antarctic Circle (aka the South Pole). He’s never been average.

Now, his passion is the Lifetime Cruise. The Lifetime Cruise is Giambattista’s personal blog about his voyages. While his next goal is to sail the Northwest Passage (aka the North Pole), the website is not only about exploring, but also a journey to discover the peoples and cultures of the world. He loves to share his experiences with others, which is how he started working with The Sailing Life Experience.

Q & A: Captain Giambattista

1. Where are you from, and how long have you been sailing?

I’m Italian, and I have been sailing since I was a teenager. I bought my first boat before my first car.

2. When and why did you decide to leave your life ashore?

We (Giambattista and his wife) left life ashore seven years ago, and since then we have been sailing more than 65.000 miles: from the Mediterranean to the Pacific, to the southern latitudes, spending one year sailing Patagonia and being the first catamaran in history to reach the Antarctic Polar Circle.

There are several reasons why we became sailing Gypsies, and they are difficult to express in just a few sentences. However, the most important thing for me was realizing that all I had built in my life had been paid for with my time. Time is the only real scarce resource in our lives, and it can’t be wasted. So I believe that although there is no rule to reach happiness, it is definitely true that we should not live a life we do not like.

In 2011, I decided that I would never spend one hour of my life doing anything I did not like.

3. What do you love most about living your life on the seas?

I love traveling, nature, and the sea. A sailing boat is the best way to experience all those things. Our floating home moves with us and travels with us as we immerse ourselves in nature. We have all our belongings on board, everything we need. We never feel like tourists. And our home is also our kingdom. We decide where to anchor and when to leave, but no matter what, we are always home.

4. What do you enjoy most about hosting guests on your ship?

We believe happiness is not real if it is not shared. Welcoming guests on board is our chance to show people a different way of life, a possible and more sustainable way to live in harmony with nature; a lifestyle where we seek out new places to visit, more cultures to experience, and more time to share with people.

5. Where is your favorite place in the world you’ve explored? What makes it so special?

It is always very difficult to name a winner among the places we have been, but the year spent sailing Patagonia and Antarctica will always be in the top experiences of my life. I think the combination of wild nature and extreme conditions, the feeling of isolation, and the unreal brightness of the colors makes a unique place on Earth. “Antarctica is otherworldly, like nothing I’ve ever seen before. The rest of the crew was just as impressive! Luca is an Italian medical student who loves to freedive the reefs in the islands. The husband of the French family was an Adidas executive, the wife was a novelist, and their son was one of the best-behaved pre-teens I’ve ever met! In reality, Layton and I were the most “boring” of the group! Feeling “boring” or “lame” compared to the nomads of the sea was a common theme during this delightful trip. We shared several late-night chats over delicious food (I forgot to mention that Giambattista is a fantastic cook) with our shipmates, discussing topics such as American and European educational and healthcare systems and the dominance of the Brazilian Instagram market. It was like a floating college class during each conversation!

The ship itself was top of the line. However, it is best to come with certain expectations in mind.

A ship is not a hotel. There is a finite amount of electricity, fresh water, space, and gas during your trip. Your cabin will be small. There will not be any air conditioning. You won’t be able to take many showers, if any at all.

Then there is the notion of seasickness. These ships are not cruise ships, which can glide over even the roughest waters. These ships fight the waves and are continually being rocked back and forth. If you happen to suffer from motion sickness, this is not a time to forget the Dramamine!

If you can deal with these unique factors of a sailboat, then you will be blessed with the benefits.

Cruising the open waters on a ship is an exhilarating feeling. The wind whipping through your hair, the sea spray cooling your skin, and the smell of the salt in the air is a calming experience. Walking on the deck as your ship fights 10- to 15-foot waves is a bit of a struggle, but the experience makes you appreciate the explorers you’ve read about in history class.

Life On The High Seas

Life on the sea is different from life on land in nearly every aspect.

First comes the scenery.

Viewing the world from the open ocean is unlike any other viewpoint. From the beauty of the water to the islands on the horizon, you stand in awe of the handiwork of nature as you slide over the globe. We sailed relatively close to the coast of Panama most of the time, which gave us a beautiful view of the country that few others see. Once you are in the islands, the view gets better. At one point, I could count 13 islands surrounding us from our anchorage. It was magical to glide in and out of the island chain, with an ever-changing theatre of beauty surrounding us.

Then come the activities.

When you are on a boat, the ocean is your playground. At any point, you can set anchor and jump on in!

Your itinerary for the day is up to you. We climbed palm trees, cut down coconuts, swam to uninhabited islands, freedived reefs, and sunbathed with the locals. We didn’t even have time to fish, spearfish, or scuba dive, but all of those are on the list of possibilities as well!

Of course, sailing is a significant activity by itself. Over the four days, we were in motion for a total of 16 hours. It was five hours to the islands from the marina and five hours back. Between certain islands, it was an hour or two of sailing as well. Sailing isn’t like driving. You set your headings and just coast for hours. This gives you plenty of time to read, nap, or chat with the rest of the crew. Napping seemed to be the favorite choice! I was well rested after each long trip.

Last, but certainly not least, come the people.

We had the opportunity to grab dinner with another crew on our last night. Marina, the owner of the Sailing Life Experience, and her team were headed to Tahiti next week, so we took the opportunity to chat with them. It was eye-opening.

In America, most of us were raised to get an education, go to work, get married, buy a house, and follow the “path”. Anyone who strays too far off the path is deemed “odd” or “weird”. This isn’t a mindset the sailing community shares.

From our conversations, these nomads favor freedom and flexibility over everything. If they want to go somewhere, they go. If they want to leave somewhere, they leave. The ability to pick up or set down their anchor anywhere is a powerful one. They can spend as much or as little time as they want in any place. For example, Giambattista spent months in Patagonia. Marina wanted to see French Polynesia, so she’s going. Since their ship is their home, they are not at home. Even in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, they have all the comforts of their home at their fingertips.

Now, they do give up some luxuries we have on land. No Netflix on the open ocean. No lavish king-sized beds. No Amazon same-day deliveries. No In-and-Out Burgers.

However, they have everything they need: food, water, shelter, friends, and adventure. It is as romantic as it sounds.

Marina and her boyfriend, Andre, met each other just three months ago. Instead of “taking it slow”, they are headed across the Pacific Ocean together for the next month, sharing not much more than a twin mattress. The thought terrifies me, but this is normal in the sailing community. After dinner, we watched the two of them salsa dance the night away, something I can easily picture happening on the deck of their ship under the full moon during their trip.

If you want a vacation that will cause you to question some of your life aspirations and open your eyes to a new way of living, I can’t imagine a more powerful experience than sailing. Out of the 88 rooms (and four suites) at the AC Hotel by Marriott Panama City, I had the luxury of staying in the Guest Room.

The Guest Rooms feature either one king bed or two queen beds, contemporary decor, luxury bedding, flat-panel TVs, and full windows with breathtaking views of the surrounding high-rises.

Other amenities include a mini-refrigerator, marble bathroom, air conditioning, two complimentary bottles of water, pay movies, a safe, a coffee maker, a desk, a seating area, a hairdryer, an iron, and free high-speed Internet access.

I loved the room’s modern minimalism. It was a comfortable area to unwind and relax. Life seems calmer inside your room, even as you glance out upon the busy city. With tones of charcoal and brown, the sleek, bespoke style of AC Hotels shines through as you drink and breathe in the cityscape.

Property

The clean exterior of the AC Hotel Panama City shines as you approach. You will first notice the bright white exterior, contrasted by the deep shades of brown and gray that accent the entry and front desk. This urban design is flawless (like all AC Hotels).

Some of the amenities you will find on the property include a top-notch fitness center, a rooftop infinity pool that overlooks The Financial District, Historical Casco Viejo, and the Pacific Ocean, an on-site restaurant, spa, and complimentary underground parking.

AC Kitchen & Lounge

The AC Kitchen, located on the first floor of the AC Hotel, is an excellent option for breakfast and lunch. They offer a European-inspired breakfast buffet and tapas lunch with fantastic cocktails. Every morning I looked forward to sampling different foods from the buffet before heading to the pool or out on the city for exploring!

The AC Library and Bar, located on the first floor of the AC Hotel, is the perfect place to meet with friends while enjoying cocktails and a variety of tapas. While there are many delicious dishes, you must try the shrimp! Throughout my stay, I sampled one of each of their dishes. The shrimp was a favorite, but nothing was a bad choice by any means!
