The Iconic El Capitan

No trip to Yosemite is complete without seeing El Capitan, the massive granite wall that towers 3,000 feet above the valley floor. It’s one of the most famous climbing destinations in the world, and even if you’re not a climber, just standing at its base is awe-inspiring.

If you’ve seen the documentary Free Solo, you’ll recognize El Capitan instantly. That’s where climber Alex Honnold made history by scaling the entire rock face without ropes or safety gear—a feat that’s as nerve-wracking to watch as it is to imagine in person. Once you’re there, take a few minutes to scan the wall with your eyes or binoculars; you might spot climbers slowly making their way up. Seeing them in real life gives you a true sense of just how big this granite monolith really is.

You can find good viewpoints of El Capitan along Northside Drive in Yosemite Valley. If you’re lucky, you might even catch the late afternoon sunlight turning the rock face a brilliant orange.

Los Angeles, often called the “City of Angels,” is where dreams meet reality. With its stunning beaches, iconic landmarks, and vibrant culture, it’s no wonder it’s a must-visit destination. If you’ve only got two days to explore, don’t worry we’ve got you covered. In this blog, I’ll take you through a jam-packed itinerary that balances relaxation and adventure, giving you a taste of what makes LA so unique.

If you’re a first-time visitor or just planning a quick weekend getaway, this guide will help you make the most of your time. From sunrise on the beach to Hollywood’s glitz and glam, let’s dive into our 2 days in LA adventure.

Day 1: Beaches, Art, and Downtown Delights

Morning: Catching Sunrise at Huntington Beach

We started our day early, leaving our hotel around 6:30 AM to catch the sunrise at Huntington Beach. Known as “Surf City, USA,” this spot is perfect for soaking in California vibes. The sunrise here is something else with golden rays bouncing off the waves as surfers carve through the water.

Watching the surfers is a mesmerizing experience, even if you’re not ready to ride the waves yourself. Taking a leisurely stroll down Huntington Beach Pier is a must, and Ruby’s Diner at the end offers a great breakfast with ocean views. The boardwalk is also bike-friendly, so we rented bikes and cruised along the coast for about an hour. Allocate about two hours here to take it all in.

We took a guided tour of the TCL Chinese Theatre to admire the iconic handprints and learn about its history. By late morning, we drove about 20 minutes to Griffith Observatory. The panoramic views of LA and the Hollywood Sign were stunning, and we spent around 1.5 hours here, including a quick planetarium show. Parking at Griffith can be tricky, so arrive early or be prepared to walk.

The Sunset Strip is known for its live music venues, like Whisky a Go Go and The Roxy, which are worth checking out. We caught a live performance that felt like classic LA. For a more relaxed vibe, we headed to a rooftop lounge and sipped cocktails while taking in views of the sparkling city skyline.

The nightlife is also top tier in Los Angeles. End your trip with a bang at one of the Strip’s legendary nightclubs. Alternatively, take a late-night drive up Mulholland Drive for one last breathtaking view of the city lights. It’s the perfect way to say goodbye to LA.

Stuck between the desert of Arizona and the beach of San Diego, Imperial County is unlike any other county in California.

Thousands of acres of farmland have transformed the desert into one of California’s most productive farming regions. Imperial County brings in an annual crop production of over $1 billion and employs nearly 50%of all county citizens. Farming relies heavily on irrigation, given that the area receives only about 3 inches of rainfall per year. As you drive throughout the county, you’ll see the water distribution system, which includes over 1,400 miles of canal and 1,100 miles of pipeline.

You’ve probably already seen Imperial County in some of your favorite movies… Because of the county’s desert environment and proximity to Los Angeles, movies are sometimes filmed in the sand dunes outside the agricultural portions of the county. These have included Return of the Jedi, Stargate, The Scorpion King, Jarhead, Resident Evil: Extinction, Borat, Top Gun, Independence Day, American Sniper, and Into the Wild.

A truly unique California experience, Imperial County offers an eerie, deserted, vibrant, spiritual, and beautiful travel experience.

The Salton Sea

The Salton Sea is one of the most bizarre places I’ve ever been to.

You’ll know you are approaching once you start to smell dead fish. If you open your car doors or windows, there’s no escaping the stench. The smell was so strong that I couldn’t stay at the beach for more than 10 minutes. Such a shame since it really was beautiful in a sort of eerie way. As you look out across the lake, the horizon is not clear as the blue sky and reflective waters blend together. Clouds circle around the lake, but none ever ventured over the waters. The beaches lining the shore are completely deserted, some even littered with abandoned boats, chairs, and other odd objects. Really quite a funky place, but it makes for some excellent photos.

If you decide to go, visit Bombay Beach. With a population of 295, run-down buildings, and trailers lining the streets, this town looks straight out of a post-apocalyptic movie. They even have a drive-in theater filled with old classic cars for you to sit in (if you aren’t afraid of tetanus)!

Best Time: Sunrise. I went midday and thought the lighting was just a little harsh. The soft light in the morning would be really quite beautiful as it glistens over the water. Also, the smell of dead fish during the day was strong, so I’m thinking it wouldn’t be as bad in the mornings when it’s cooler.

Salvation Mountain

Another unique place to visit in Imperial County is Salvation Mountain.

Salvation Mountain was built by a Korean War veteran and Slab City resident named Leonard Knight as a tribute to God with its recurring message of “God is Love”. The “mountain” is 50 feet tall and 150 feet wide, made primarily with adobe clay, straw, and donated latex paint. Over the course of 30 years, he constructed this rainbow-colored hill with Bible verses, flowers, and positive messages, and topped it with a white cross. In 2014, Leonard passed away, yet his message that “God is love” continues to live on. It is truly a monument of love.

The technicolor mountain and positive messages make for some beautiful photos, so be sure not to miss it.

Best Time: Midday. While the lighting is harsh midday, the colors were so vivid and bright – perfect for photos.

Imperial Sand Dunes

For such a long time, I’ve driven by sand dunes on my way to San Diego, but I thought it was just for ATVs and dune buggies. However, after much research, I discovered the Hugh T. Osborne Lookout Park, where you can wander around and enjoy these 50-foot dunes.

If you only visit Imperial County for these sand dunes alone, the trip is 100% worth the effort. Known as the Imperial or Glamis Sand Dunes, they are part of the Algodones Dunes, the largest sand dunes in the U.S. They are a large, active dune field created by prevailing northwesterly and westerly winds.

Standing on top of one, all you can see for miles are more dunes. It’s almost like being teleported straight to the Sahara Desert. That is exactly why these dunes were used by General Patton to train his troops for battle in the North African campaign during WWII! The climate and similar terrain made for the perfect training location. And for all you Star Wars fans, this is where the famous Sarlacc pit scene from Return of the Jedi was filmed.

Best Time: Sunset. The golden light is so perfect as it sets over the sand dunes. If you’re lucky, a little breeze will blow the sand to create a little haze and ripples in the dunes. However, if you go midday, make sure to bring thick socks. They will protect your feet from burning in the hot sand.

Palm Springs. The ultimate desert vacation for fun, relaxation, and, of course, pool time. Don’t forget about the amazing art, food, entertainment, and shopping! When staying in the desert jewel of Southern California, there’s no way you’ll find yourself without anything to do.

While exploring this city, I found some beautiful spots that are sure to make your Instagram feed pop. To help you spend more time enjoying your vacation instead of searching for the most picturesque spots around town, here are my picks for the 5 most Insta-worthy places around Palm Springs.

Windmills

The windmill farms along Interstate-10 are something you couldn’t miss even if you tried. The sea of 4,000 large, white windmills is a source of clean energy that generates power for the entire Coachella Valley. The whirling blades are quite mesmerizing. While the windmills alone are beautiful, it is the San Jacinto and San Gorgonio Mountain ranges southwest of the wind farms that make the photos one of a kind.

Best Time: Sunset or Sunrise. If you go any time in between, the sun creates a stark silhouette of the turbines in the mountain pass.

Directions: To get up close, drive North on N. Indian Canyon Drive (between I-10 and W San Rafael Drive). Before you reach the I-10, take a left onto Garnet Ave. Drive for about 1 mile, and you’ll see some side roads to the left where you can pull off and walk closer to the windmills.

The Pink Door

You might wonder who would’ve been brave enough to paint a door bubblegum pink? The answer: Moises Esquenazi.

Moises, an interior designer in New York, renovated the vine-covered home, transforming it into what it is today. What’s funny is that at first, there was talk in the neighborhood to change the color of the door. However, over time, it has become an infamous spot for photos and even has its own hashtag: #thatpinkdoor.

Best time: Sunrise or Sunset. Both will have perfect lighting, so there are no harsh shadows — plus, you’ll hopefully miss the desert heat. However, if you don’t want to wait in line for a photo, sunrise is even better. That’s when I went, and there was absolutely no one around.

UPDATE: Photography is no longer permitted at “That Pink Door.” Due to the overwhelming number of people who stop by for photos, the owners have asked that visitors please respect their private property and not trespass. However, you can still drive by and have a look at this lovely home.

The rainbow of colors decorating The Saguaro makes it the most Instagrammable hotel in all of Palm Springs.

In 2012, the hotel underwent renovations under the supervision of New York-based Stamberg Aferiat Architecture, whose goal was to mimic the colors of desert wildflowers. 14 beautiful colors were chosen to match the hotel’s longest façade, which is 14 rooms with 14 balconies. These vibrant colors make it impossible not to feel instantly happy as you walk around the hotel.

Don’t miss out on this wonderland of color! There are literally hundreds of picturesque places around the hotel. Some of my favorites were by the pool, the terrace from the ballroom, and inside by the lobby. I promise you’ll have so many photos, you won’t know what to do with all of them!

Plus, if you’re hungry, be sure to check out the restaurant inside The Saguaro, El Jefe. They have an amazing happy hour Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 pm with $5 margaritas! Their Pork Tacos were the BEST I have ever had in my life! However, I’m not surprised since the restaurant is run by celebrity chef Jose Garces!

Best Time: Midday. While the light will be harsh, this is the only time when the pool and the inside area of the complex will be without any shadows. All the colors from the different hotel balconies will be bright and vibrant.

The Parker Hotel

The hotel’s origins date back to 1959 and were California’s very first Holiday Inn! However, after being bought and sold multiple times, the property was purchased in 2002 by hotelier Jack Parker. He enlisted designer Jonathan Adler, famous for his modern American-glamour style, to lead a $ 27-million renovation of the property. In 2004, the hotel reopened as the Parker Palm Springs, decorated in what Adler likes to call “hippie chic,” with an eclectic mix of vintage treasures decorating the guest rooms and common spaces.

Since then, The Parker has become extremely famous on Instagram for its patterned white concrete wall and vibrant red front door.

WARNING: The Parker does not allow photography with DSLR cameras. If you want to take photos, you must use an iPhone or a digital camera. To obtain a permit to use a DRSL camera, you must apply days in advance, and the cost is $2,500!!!

Best Time: Midday. The hotel faces East and West, so the only time when the infamous white wall and red door entrance is not shaded is around noon.

El Paseo Drive

Known as the Rodeo Drive of the desert, El Paseo Drive is located just outside of Palm Springs in Palm Desert. It features over 300 world-class shops, clothing boutiques, art galleries, jewelers, restaurants, and more. What makes El Paseo so picturesque is that it is lined with a beautifully maintained, floral-and-statue-filled mile!

Best Time: Sunrise. There is no one driving down the street or parked alongside the road in the early morning, so take advantage of this for some awesome shots down this fabulous shopping strip.
