Tulum was a vibe, but the real highlight of our weekend in Mexico was our 36-foot private catamaran charter in Cozumel.
After exploring the ruins and swimming in cenotes near Tulum, Layton and I met up with friends for a day out on the water. We booked a 36’ private catamaran in Cozumel, and it turned out to be the reset we didn’t know we needed.
First Impressions
The boat was exactly as described: clean, well-kept, and spacious. It’s a power catamaran, which means it’s wider and more stable than a regular boat. The moment we stepped on board, we noticed how steady it felt. Even when we were cruising at a good speed, the ride stayed smooth. No one felt seasick, which says a lot.
It fits up to 15 guests, and our group had plenty of room to spread out. Nothing felt cramped. Everyone found their own favorite spot within minutes.

Layout and Comfort
One of the best parts of this catamaran is the layout. At the back, there’s a shaded sofa area. This is where most of us started the day. It’s perfect if you want to relax without being directly under the sun. We sipped drinks, played music through the Bluetooth sound system, and just enjoyed the breeze.
At the front, there’s a wide sundeck. If you like tanning or sitting up front while the boat cuts through the water, this is the spot. A few of us stretched out there and rode the waves. It felt freeing, especially with the Caribbean water all around us.
Because it’s a catamaran, the front area feels secure and stable. You don’t feel like you’re going to slide off. It’s comfortable enough to lie down and just watch the horizon.

The Crew and Service
The crew made a big difference in the overall experience. From the start, communication was clear. Before the trip, they explained the meeting point, the weather expectations, and what we should bring. Everything felt organized.
On board, they were attentive without hovering. Drinks were refilled, snorkeling gear was handed out and adjusted, and they kept checking if we were comfortable. When we wanted more time in the water, they adjusted the pace. It didn’t feel rushed.
They also helped personalize the trip. Since we were celebrating a small milestone, they made it feel special without making it over the top. Simple touches go a long way.

The Itinerary
We chose a longer charter so we could visit El Cielo. If you book for 3 or 4 hours, the boat goes to Fury Reef, which is known for its coral and marine life. For 5, 6, or 8 hours, you can head to El Cielo.
El Cielo is famous for its clear water and starfish. When we got there, the water looked unreal. You could see straight to the bottom. We anchored and jumped in with snorkeling gear. We saw colorful fish, coral formations, and even spotted rays in the distance.
The crew also had paddleboards and floaties available. Some of us snorkeled while others just floated around and talked. It felt like having our own private slice of the Caribbean.
We made two reef stops, which gave everyone enough time in the water without feeling tired. If you’re traveling with family, this setup works well because people can choose their own activity level.

Food and Drinks
The charter includes a premium open bar, which honestly surprised us in a good way. There was bottled water, juice, sodas, and beer. For liquor, they provided vodka, tequila, whiskey, and rum. They also made cocktails like piña coladas, margaritas, and tequila sunrises.
Having margaritas while cruising along the coast of Cozumel just hits differently.
Food depends on the number of hours you book. All experiences include a fruit plate, pico de gallo, guacamole, and flour quesadillas. Since we booked a longer trip, we also had ceviche and hot food like chicken fajitas. Everything was fresh and easy to eat on a boat. Nothing too heavy.
It wasn’t a fine dining experience, but that’s not the point. It was solid, satisfying boat food that paired well with the setting.
Value and Pricing
The base price is $310 USD per hour and includes up to 10 guests. You can bring up to 15 people total, with an extra fee per additional guest.
If you divide the cost among a group, it becomes reasonable for a private experience. Considering it includes the boat, crew, open bar, snorkeling gear, paddleboards, floaties, towels, and food, it feels fair.
For small and medium-sized groups, this setup makes more sense than booking separate tours. You control the vibe, the music, and the pace.
Who This Is For
This catamaran is ideal for:
- Friend groups celebrating birthdays or milestones
- Families who want a private and flexible day at sea
- Couples traveling with friends
- Anyone who prefers a more personal experience over crowded tours
Because it’s private, you don’t have to deal with strangers. You can be loud, play your own playlist, and relax fully.
Final Thoughts
If you’re heading to Cozumel and want a day that feels easy and well planned, this 36’ private catamaran is worth booking. The boat is clean and stable, the crew is attentive, and the stops at El Cielo give you that clear Caribbean water you came for. It’s private, flexible, and ideal for small groups who want to enjoy the ocean without crowds.
For us, it was the highlight of the weekend. Good boat, good crew, good water, and time with friends — it all came together naturally.
